E3 2019: Nintendo Direct

To finish off this year’s press conferences just like last year is Nintendo with a new Direct. As before, I will be talking about my thoughts going in, ranking game announcements, and wrapping up with concluding thoughts.

Last year, I criticized Nintendo for making their press conference a simple video and not a stage presence like other shows. Over time, however, I have come to love their Direct format. It’s simple, and it allows them to put out announcements throughout the year, which they have. That plus how lackluster the previous conferences were did leave me concerned going in, fearing Nintendo wouldn’t have a lot to talk about it. With that said, let’s get into what was talked about.

For the sake of time, I will not be including the games in the highlight reel as part of the rank. The games on the reel include Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Hollow Knight Silksong, Ni No Kuni Way of the White Witch, Minecraft Dungeons, Elder Scrolls Blades, My Friend Pedro, Doom Eternal, The Sinking City, Wolfenstein Youngblood, Dead by Daylight, Alien Isolation, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Dragon Quest Builders 2, Stranger Things 3, Just Dance 2020, Catan, Super Lucky’s Tale, Dauntless, and Super Mario Maker 2.

21. Dark Crystal Age of Resistance Tactics

Even though I am a fan of turn-based strategy games, I came out this trailer with very low hopes for this game. The whole thing kind of looked goofy, and I know there are better strategy games than this one.

20. Resident Evil 5 and 6

While I do like the fact that these two made it onto Switch, these two Resident Evil games are my least favorite.

19. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters

This direct brought two different character trailers, one for Dragon Quest and the other for Banjo Kazooie. I still cannot find myself getting incredibly attached to fighting games, but I am glad there are new characters arriving to Smash.

18. Daemon X Machina

I actually did play this game a little while back, and I am not a fan of the game. Hopefully things have been changed, but if the game is just like what I played, then count me out.

17. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

The game looks like fun, but it already had its time to shine a little while back, so I didn’t want to rank it any higher.

16. Trials of Mana and Collection of Mana

The Switch is getting some new Mana games, including a new one as well as a collection of three older ones. I have heard a lot of great things about Secret of Mana, so I think this bundle will be a good jumping-in point.

It’s Mana-nificent! I’m sorry.

15. Dragon Quest 11 Remaster

While I am a crazy human being and want to play through the other games before hitting this one, I still want to play to this game. Plus, the song used for the trailer is fantastic.

14. Contra Rogue and Contra Collection

Contra is going from side-scrolling to top-down, and I kind of dig it. On top of that, my crazy self will want to play all other Contra games before it, and a new Konami collection for the series is coming out as well.

13. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games

I cannot believe they are making another one of these. I was about to dismiss it, but then I saw climbing, and then I kind of got into the idea of sports mini-games.

Who is belaying him? Why is his chalk bag on the side? How did they drill a blue hold into glass? Oh never mind.

12. Astral Chain

I didn’t think I would be into this game, but I like the idea of two different entities working together using the chain that connects them.

11. Fire Emblem 3 Houses

I still haven’t played a Fire Emblem game yet, so now is my chance. On top of that, this game looks like it is going for something deeper that other Fire Emblem games haven’t.

10. Panzer Dragoon

This is a game I have heard a lot of people talking about, but couldn’t get the chance to play. Well, that chance is now going to be on the Switch.

9. No More Heroes 3

Despite the mixed reception of the spinoff, I have been wanting to try a proper No More Heroes games. I hope the first two games hit Switch, but if not then I am fine with playing this game.

8. Witcher 3

The entirety of the game is going to release on the Switch, which sounds like a nightmare to run and a dream come true at the same time. I couldn’t find myself getting into the game on PC for some reason, but I actually believe that playing it on this system will finally get me to play through the game in its entirety.

7. Pokemon Sword and Shield

Yes, I haven’t really a played a Pokemon game. I keep meaning to, but I haven’t gotten to it. I do still want to play the Let’s Go games, but these new games look like a pretty big change to the formula that I am really excited about.

This must be a nightmare for the arena’s safety code.

6. Animal Crossing New Horizons

The new Animal Crossings game has a new name and a new release date. Even though this game was already announced a little while back, I am still excited to try out an Animal Crossing game for the first time.

5. Cadence of Hyrule

Squishing Crypt of the NecroDancer and The Legend of Zelda together is Cadence of Hyrule, a game already announced but a game I want to play. The few minutes I have put into NecroDancer have been a blast, and throwing that into Hyrule sounds like a recipe for success.

4. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

Link is getting a new top-down game on Switch soon. Though already announced earlier, this game in action looks fantastic. On top of that, a dungeon builder was announced, which sounds like it has a lot of potential.

3. Empire of Sin

A game that takes place in the Prohibition era with gangsters, as a turn-based strategy game, AND a city management game? Sign me up.

This game ticks all of the right boxes for me.

2. Luigi’s Mansion 3

While my thoughts on the series have been neutral, the new trailer shown got me incredibly excited. It took me back to the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, and I can’t wait to be Gooig, I meant Luigi.

1. Breath of the Wild Sequel

While very little was shown, the announcement of a new Breath of the Wild that takes an ever darker step for the series sounds really exciting.

In Conclusion

While there were quite a few repeats, Nintendo easily had the best press conference this year because they did the one thing others didn’t: announce a lot of new games. On top of that, Nintendo stands in an interesting position where really any title announced from them is newsworthy because they are a portable device. The Switch has been going strong for two years, and this Direct shows that they plan to stay strong in the future.
